What is this appeal for?

In 1978 a small group of women and men got together to start collecting and preserving the history of gay and lesbian Australia. Thirty years later, their efforts and of scores of volunteers have built the Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives, the only national collection of lesbian, bisexual, queer, gay and transgender historical materials in Australia.

We are celebrating our 30th year by launching a campaign to ensure these vital histories are around for the future. Currently the Archives collection is split up with one third being housed at our main site at the Victorian AIDS Council and the rest stored across members' houses and private storage. We are currently extremely stretched for space and do not have the capacity to accept large collections of material.

How will the funds be used?
Your contribution will help us honour the lives and histories of previous generations of gays and lesbians.

Your funds will be used to help us bring the collection together in one place and embark upon a comprehensive digitisation program to make the Archives' unique collection accessible in the future.

Key areas of expenditure for funds donated:

Housing the collection: renting or buying new space;
Preserving the collection and making it accessible: purchasing archival materials and digitising collections;
Sharing our histories: exhibitions, publishing and education programs.
