What is this appeal for?
Kirsty Sword Gusmao, First Lady of Timor-Leste and Chairwoman of Alola Foundation, returned to her homeland of Australia as keynote speaker for UNIFEM's International Women's Day breakfast program in March.
We celebrated this visit with the launch of the new Alola Foundation 'Giving Site' - so welcome!
Since this visit, outbreaks of violence have caused fresh trauma for the people of Timor Leste and women and children are once again suffering.
Our Program...
We are adjusting our Alola programs to respond to the current needs of women and children, particularly people in the camps.
Your involvement with the Alola Foundation's projects will directly improve the lives of Timorese women, their children and families.
You can make a positive difference by contributing to Alola. You can assist Alola to help save lives by providing humanitarian aid, education, advocacy and health services - all directed towards strengthening the economic, political and social wellbeing of women and children in Timor-Leste.
Key areas of expenditure for funds donated:
- Timor-Leste has one of the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world and only 10% of women attend health facilities to give birth. Provide a mother with the essentials for her baby, including critical post-natal health information, plus follow-up care from our Mother Support Groups, for only $35
- Production and distribution of re-useable pads in the camps at a cost of $1.00
- Many children in Timor-Leste do not have the opportunity to attend primary school due to poverty. Just $75 can provide for a child's education, for one year
- Children make up more than 50% of Timor's population. Many schools do not have basic equipment necessary to provide a stimulating learning environment. Help stimulate learning through art, music or sport, for only $150
- Provide a workshop to train 35 teachers in using more creative teaching methods, just $1,350
- A regional health coordinator's salary is less than $350 per month. These trained health professionals educate community health volunteers at the village level, for just $4000 a year.
