A.Q.A Peer Support Program A.Q.A Peer Support Program
By: AQA Victoria Ltd

What is this appeal for?
Spinal cord injury is a catastrophic event for people physiologically, psychologically and socially. Persons affected are often defined by what they can no longer do. The support of a skilled peer supporter can be one of the most powerful interventions at this time of great upheaval.

Funds raised will contribute towards the further development of the AQA Peer Support Program.

How will the funds be used?
Funds will directly support:
  • Visits to support people in Hospital who are struggling with the upheaval of a new spinal injury.
  • Continuing contact with people as they make the transition home for the first time after their injury
  • Ongoing Peer support aimed at connecting people with spinal cord injury to opportunities to participate in community life, including work, education and social experiences.
The AQA Peer Support Program also includes Life Skills sessions at the Victorian Spinal Cord Service (VSCS) for newly spinal cord injured people. AQA, in partnership with VSCS conduct 4 sessions a year that are designed to provide a forum where communication amongst peers and people from various vocations present and are available for discussion about career paths and opportunities. The purpose of these life skills days is to motivate and inform individuals about opportunities and choices that are available to them. AQA plans to increase the number and location of Life Skills Days that are offered, possibly in regional Victoria in conjunction with the VSCS spinal clinics that are already held.

Key areas of expenditure for funds donated:
  • Peer Support - broaden contact group
  • Service coordination
  • Life Skills Sessions
