Targeting A Cure For Leukaemia

What is this appeal for?

Each year approximately 6460 Australian adults and children are diagnosed with leukaemia or a related blood disorder. Over the next five years more than 30,000 people will be diagnosed.

In 2003, there were 1,112 bone marrow transplants in Australia - 711 male and 401 female. Patients ranged in age from 56 days to 79 years. Of these transplants, 360 were allogeneic (when a patient receives matched blood stem cells from a sibling or unrelated volunteer) and 752 were autologous (when a patient receives an infusion of their own stem cells after high-dose chemotherapy). Many major medical advances have been made in recent years in a worldwide effort to improve the safety of bone marrow transplants. In 2003, the procedural related mortality within 100 days for allogeneic transplants carried out in Australia was 11%, compared to 21% in 1993.

How will these funds be used?

Your donations will be used to fund research projects on bone marrow and adult stem cell transplantation as a treatment for leukaemia and other related diseases.
