Victoria Monthly Newsletter for September 2003

Part 1 - This Month's Highlights

Hello and welcome to this month's edition of the EasyGrants Newsletter and Grants Education Service. This month includes a variety of different grants from your community group including a fantastic opportunity from the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust Grants. This program offers a huge scope for a wide range of different projects including education (schools), public health (health awareness groups), cultural activities (arts groups, indigenous groups, multicultural groups) and social welfare with a focus on disability and aged care. There are an incredibly diverse range of projects that have received funding over the past decades from this foundation.

This month's newsletter also features a variety of grants from the ANZ Foundation including two particularly good opportunities for many of our subscribers. The Small Grants Program in Victoria tries to make organisations more effective by facilitating co-operative and collaborative arrangements with other organisations. The community sector is full of these sorts of arrangements so this is your opportunity to facilitate what is often a very fruitful arrangement. Organisations with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) Status should be applying for another great opportunity provided by ANZ with the Victorian Community Foundation - General Fund. Providing those ever so useful small grants of between $1,000 and $5,000, this is another opportunity you should be investigating for all your charitable purposes.

The Inger Rice Foundation is also noteworthy. This foundation focuses on improving parent/child relationships. Many of you will already be doing this without even realising it or working with young children to create a better connection with parents and family. For instance, Darwin Toy Library successfully applied for a grant from the Foundation and was able to buy toys that they were previously unable to afford.

Best of luck with your grant seeking

Part 4 - The Grants Guru: Your Grants Education Service

Laverton Toy Library - Forest Hill Foundation Grant

This week in our peer learning section of the newsletter we take a look at Cathy Green and the Laverton Toy Library which received a grant from the Forest Hill Foundation to provide a "party pack" to be hired out from the Toy Library to families who wanted to give their children a great party but couldn't afford it. Here's what Cathy had to say about her grant seeking process.

OurCommunity: What process do you have to help you locate relevant grants?

Cathy Green: We have become aware of all of the grants we have applied for so far through the ourcommunity Easy Grants newsletter.

OurCommunity: Do you have a Fundraising/Grants team? How does this operate?

Cathy Green: We only have 8 members on our toy library committee so two of us have taken on the extra role of seeking & applying for grants. Our whole committee review the ourcommunity newsletter and inform the vice-president of any relevant grants we should look at. Then the two volunteers for the role of sponsorship / fundraising look at the grants, decide which ones we should apply for, then work together to complete the application. Once finished one member usually fine tunes the final copy before mailing it.

OurCommunity: Do you have any tips for other grant seekers writing an application?

Cathy Green: With some grants we have included pictures of what we would like to use the funds for so the people reviewing our application can visualise what we are trying to achieve. Others include:

OurCommunity: In your opinion, what was it about this particular grant application that made it successful?

Cathy Green: With the Forest Hill Foundation Grant we applied for money to purchase a Party Pack to be hired out to our members for a minimal cost. The Party Pack is a group of 8 large and expensive toys that promotes interactive play amongst the children. Parties are very expensive, every child loves a party and through our party pack we are providing a fantastic service to our members which would be otherwise unaffordable.

I believe that we were successful with this grant because it was an innovative idea, with a very specific, achievable goal. We also included pictures of all of the toys we wished to purchase so that the people reading our application could visualise what we wanted to achieve. We were also only asking for a small amount of money which was probably to our advantage with this application.

Thank you to Our Community for providing such a fantastic service to the community - especially non-profit organisations like ours solely operated by volunteers. Thanks also to the Forest Hill Foundation for their financial support. Our party pack will be available to our members soon thanks to your generosity.

Tip

We've mentioned before the importance of a fundraising committee that meets to discuss their funding options and the Laverty Toy Library is a superb example of this.

Cathy also raised another important issue of matching your aims with the aims of the organisation you are applying for funding from. This is central to any application. In fact if your aims don't align with the funding bodies the we recommend you don't apply for that grants. However, you will very rarely match your aims perfectly so you need to think about how you address these aims in your applications which requires a bit of "thinking outside the square". As Cathy said "Instead of just asking for toys, apply for educational games that develop co-operation, communication and social skills". IN other words it wasn't sop much about what resources were needed as about how those resources could make an impact and lead to an improved outcome with the target audience - in this case children.

So here are some tips about how to think about your funding program:

Unless you can align your aims with the grantmaker's aims you will struggle to get funded. With close consultation and some abstract thought you increase your funding chances considerably. Remember to give the grantmaker a call and get a good understanding of what they are trying to achieve then write your application accordingly.

Best of Luck

Science and Medicine Grants

G02853
Provider: The CASS Foundation
Category: Health & Wellbeing
Funding: Various

Purpose: To fund projects, research and development in science and medicine.

What we understand by this term is that the application deals with a concept, hypothesis, postulate or the like which, by its proposed project, the applicant hopes to prove correct or to validate, to the extent that further research and development on the concept/hypothesis/postulate will be worthwhile.

Limitations: For further clarification, we can also indicate that the Foundation will be unlikely to consider applications:

Part 9 – Schedule for EasyGrants
The following is a schedule for the Easy Grants Newsletter and Grants Education Service. We do our best to meet the deadlines we have set however from time to time it is a little late; however this is only to ensure you get all the latest information available. Grants have timelines and on occasion it is necessary to delay the newsletter to include a significant grant program.

PLEASE NOTE: This schedule is for the emailed version of the newsletter not the hard copy version. We begin the printing on the day listed below. You will receive your newsletter within a week of this date.
