Let's TALK - Talking and Learning for Kids

By: CHI.L.D. Association

What is this appeal for?
Imagine you are in a foreign country or, even worse, on another planet! You don't speak the language, you can't understand what people are saying to you and you can't make your needs known. You can hear what is being said, but no matter how hard you listen, you can't comprehend it and you can't even communicate the fact that you don't understand. That is what life is like every day for children with severe primary speech language and related learning disorder.

CHI.L.D The Association for Childhood Language and Related Disorders, operates the Glenleighden School, located at Fig Tree Pocket, and is the only organisation in Australia to offer multidisciplinary (speech language pathology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychology as well as specialised teaching and music therapy) support to children with severe primary speech and language disorder. The Glenleighden School is the only school of its kind in Australia.

...
The disability, primary language disorder, is poorly understood by parents, teachers and the community at large. It carries significant risk of school failure and poor social and emotional outcomes in adult life. CHI.L.D has been operating educational programs for children faced with this disability for over 25 years. It is one if the main international pioneers in this area and is a unique resource.

The need for funding is ongoing and fundraising is essential to ensure C.H.I.L.D can continue its valuable work for children with this "hidden disability"

How will the funds be used?
While CHI.L.D is supported by Commonwealth and State funding, the Association relies heavily on ongoing contributions and community support to assist in providing cutting edge facilities, programs and technology.

All families pay fees to access the services provided at The Glenleighden School as well as the Outreach Services program which supports students throughout regional and rural Queensland. Many families struggle with these associated costs.

Key areas of expenditure for funds donated:
  • Early intervention and therapy programs as well as providing vocational opportunities for senior students.
  • Supporting families and professionals in rural and regional areas by providing state of the art technology, allowing them to access information and therapy.
  • Upgrading facilities at The Glenleighden School
Is this appeal tax deductible? Yes
Will I receive a receipt for my donation? Yes, though it will be delayed as it is sent by CHI.L.D. Association
