Communities in Control 2003 - speeches

Papers and presentations from the inaugural Communities in Control conference are provided below.

We thank all our keynote speakers and especially our international guests and Inaugural Pratt Community Fellows, Emeritus Professor Len Syme and Professor Lisa Berkman for the effort and intellectual power that they injected into the conference.

Emeritus Professor Syme and Professor Berkman are two of the world's eminent leaders in the measurement of the impact of strong communities on the health and wellbeing of citizens.

Syme says, "Of the billions of dollars that are spent each year in the United States, not one dollar actually works to prevent child abuse, suicide, heart disease, stroke, school truancy... except funds going to communities who set their own priorities, and are enabled to establish their own programs. Communities in control is the only preventative method that works."
