What makes a life worth living?
Communities in Control: May 26

Hugh Mackay

"Deep within us, we know the survival of our communities - the survival of the species itself - depends on paying more attention to that insistent message that comes to us from every religious and moral tradition of East and West: treat other people the way you'd like to be treated."

So writes Hugh Mackay in his latest book, The Good Life: What Makes a Life Worth Living?

A pioneering social researcher, Hugh is renowned for his extraordinary ability to dig into and under the statistics to reveal insights about how and why we and our communities tick.

He's written 14 books, nine of them in the field of social psychology and ethics, and regularly appears in newspapers and other media commentating on social issues.

When Hugh first appeared at Communities in Control in 2007, his presentation on "what makes us tick" was described by many as the highlight of their two-day experience. Now he's back.

Join us, and Hugh, for Communities in Control 2014 (Moonee Ponds, Melbourne, May 26 and 27) where we'll be reflecting on Australia's place as "The Lucky Country", and all of our places - as individuals, as communities - within that construction.

As Hugh writes, "a moment's reflection on the idea of 'goodness' will remind us that the good life is a life lived for others; a life in which we focus more on Who are we? than Who am I?"
