Macclesfield Landcare Group embraces sustainable land management practices that enhance the natural landscape by promoting healthy waterways, by linking areas of native vegetation and encouraging diversity of native wildlife.

The Intent of Macclesfield Landcare Group:

Macclesfield Landcare Group's primary aims are:

To control the spread of weeds and animal pests and work towards their eradication through an integrated pest management program.

To promote sustainable land and water management practices, particularly via "Whole Farm Planning".

To urge landholders to retain, protect and reinstate indigenous vegetation.

To help reverse land degradation.

To foster within the community an understanding of Landcare issues and concepts and the promotion of Young Landcare through affiliation with local primary schools.

Recent Accomplishments of Macclesfield Landcare Group:

With the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater Inc and with funding from the Department of Sustainability and Environment (Vic), in January 2006 Macclesfield Landcare Group published a Biodiversity Local Area Plan for conserving natural habitat in the Woori Yallock Creek sub-catchment.  Since then the two groups have been liaising with several agencies to implement the actions identified in the Plan.  Works include weed control, fencing of remnant vegetation, planting indigenous plants and on-going community education.

For several years Macclesfield Landcare Group has obtained grants for these activities and has been able to employ a part-time Facilitator.

Current Activities of Macclesfield Landcare Group:

Newsletter (typically 5 or more A4 sides) published 5 or 6 times per year.

Guest speaker program - Group typically meets 5 times per year.

Field days typically on environmental or farming issues (eg, soil health).

Working with the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater to implement the actions identified in the Biodiversity Local Area Plan.

Working bees such as weed control or planting.

Working with other environment groups in the area to progress the concept of a "park" to incorporate existing Crown Land in the catchment.  This would improve the management of these areas, and provide habitat links for wildlife between proclaimed Reserves.

Working with the Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority on their "Yarra For Life" major project, particularly in the areas of river health and biolinks.
