Employment Fund Appeal

Employment Fund Appeal

By: Inner North Community Foundation

What is this appeal for?
The inner northern suburbs of Melbourne have among the highest rates of youth unemployment in Victoria. We want to change that situation and help our young people to turn their lives around with access to training and job opportunities that we know will make a difference. Our knowledge of job readiness and training programs shows that there are genuine solutions that can and do help young people turn their lives around. And when it's people who know the local area and understand how best to help, the grants we provide will lead to successful outcomes. Programs that make lasting changes In our first ever funding round, we have already helped 7 new projects in the inner north train unemployed young people. For most of the participants, it has been their first real taste of proper training in areas they know they will find work.

How will funds be used?
Our focus on supporting our young people to access training and work is important because:
  • 29% of 15-19 year olds in the inner north who left school early are looking for work. This is double the Victorian average
  • 45.6% of young people in the north who left school early said it was because they weren't coping with schoolwork
  • More people in our community are learning English as a second language (around 22%) than the Melbourne average (13.9%)
  • 12.8% of young people in Moreland leave school in year 8 or earlier. This is 5% higher than the Melbourne-wide average

The Inner North Community Foundation invests all donations back into the community via our grants programs. This means that our grant programs will be available to the local community for generations to come.

Imagine the future - We still have more projects we want to make a reality. Imagine being able to help bring these projects to life:

  • A driving project to help young people to get their drivers license and expand their job chances. Aside from being able to pursue work further from home, many jobs themselves require people to have a valid drivers licence especially in traditional trades, horticulture and many warehousing jobs.
  • A community leadership program for young Collingwood/Fitzroy residents who have experienced disadvantage. These young people are developing community projects with local agencies, and a grant from us would give each of them access to a small budget to boost their community project.

  • Key areas of expenditure for funds donated:
    • We're lucky that our operations are sponsored by Inner Northern Group Training, because it means that all of our donations are invested to earn income for our grants program. Our current funding aim is to support young people towards job opportunities.
    • As our donor base grows, we'll be able to introduce new grants programs to focus on other areas of need in our local region.
    • Being a community foundation also means that we can offer a unique opportunity for families and businesses to create their named funds with associated grants programs. In this way, local people will have access to a simple way to establish a fund in their own name, to support the needy in their community and see the directly benefits of their generosity in the community in which they live.
Is this appeal tax deductible? Yes
Will I receive a receipt for my donation? Yes, though it will be delayed as it is sent by Inner North Community Foundation
