What is this appeal for?
To provide vocational training for 3500 liberated slave women in Ghana West Africa. The project is jointly funded by International Needs Australia and the Australian Government through AusAID.
How will the funds be used?
In funding the training of Trokosi slave women, you are enabling them to develop skills that will help them start small businesses so that they can provide for their families. Slave life for these women starts as young as five years old when they are sent to traditional shrines in the Volta Region of Ghana, and in Togo and in Benin. Their role is seen as appeasing the anger of the gods for crimes committed by family members. They are stigmatised for life but the work of International Needs has liberated them through negotiations with the Fetish Priests and Shrine Elders who have finally recognised that the practice is inhumane. Over 300 shrines have voluntarily given up the practice of taking Trokosi slave girls. 1500 still need to be liberated in Ghana. Thousands more are in bondage in Benin and Togo.
Key areas of expenditure for funds donated:
- The Adidome Training Centre where women are taught skills of Batik, tie and dye, soap & pomade, beauty products, dressmaking, weaving of kente cloth, cooking, bread baking, hairdressing etc.
