What is this appeal for?
The Dr Edward Koch Foundation is a non-profit organisation, established in March 1997, to focus and support public health activities in north Queensland. The Foundation is closely associated with Queensland Health's Tropical Public Health Unit and the University of Queensland, North Queensland Health Equaliites Promotional Unit, School of Population Health. We need you help to maintain the running of our current health projects including:
  • Ciguatera poisoning in north Queensland
  • Japanese Encephalitus Research
  • Irukandji Research Project
  • Suicide Prevention Project

How will the funds be used?
Money will be distributed between our current projects:
  • Irukandji Research Project: Set up to resolve the many issues surrounding the annual influx of several species of dangerous jellyfish, and their impact on the North Queensland community. More Info
  • Ciguatera poisoning in north Queensland: Ciguatera poisoning poses a constant public health risk in the tropics. It is produced by the presence of ciguatoxin in the flesh of edible fish species, including coral trout and Spanish mackerel, that are commonly caught by both recreational and commercial fishers in tropical waters.   • Japanese Encephalitus: Japanese encephalitis virus remains an annual threat to northern Australia, especially in the Torres Strait and Cape York. More Info
  • Suicide Prevention Project: To implement, support and promote strategies which aim at the reduction of suicide and self-harm. More Info


Key areas of expenditure for funds donated:
  • Public Health Seminars, obtaining key speakers and leading experts in their fields and in public health
  • Suicide Prevention Project
  • Koch for kids - a day in the park with children with disabilites & special needs
