Do I need an authority to fundraise?

Yes, you will. There are two type of licence, depending on the activities you're planning.

Section 6 Licence forthe collection of money or the sale of goods or devices,
Section 7 Licence for conducting entertainment for an admission fee.

How do I apply for an authority to fundraise?

There are two type of licence. Both are free, and both are for 12 months:

Section 6 Licence
Any organisation that wishes to:

  • collect or attempt to collect any money or goods; or
  • obtain or attempt to obtain money by the sale of any disc, badge, token, flower or other device for a charitable purpose, must be the holder of a Section 6 licence.

Section 7 Licence
Any organisation that wishes to conduct any entertainment to which a charge for admission is made, in any case where it is held out that any part of the proceeds of the entertainment are to be devoted (either wholly or partly) for any charitable purpose, must be the holder of a Section 7 licence.

Other relevant fundraising information

The Collections for Charitable Purposes Act, 1939 seeks to regulate charitable fundraising activities.

Fundraising activities include:

  • Doorknock appeals
  • Telemarketing
  • Donations to clothing bins
  • Sales of goods at secondhand shops
  • Seeking bequests
  • Badge days
  • Public appeals
  • Film nights

All licences are issued subject to the licensee complying with a Code of Practice issued by the Minister.

How can I collect donations through Our Community's Australian Giving Centre?

Once you have obtained your fundraising license, you can expand your fundraising efforts by using Our Community's online donations service which will allow you to take credit card donations 7 days a week, 24 hours per day. Along with collecting donations via the internet, you will also be able to promote donating by phone, fax, post and leaving a bequest to your organisation.

This donations facility is a commission free service offered by Our Community - we take NO commission or fees for this service. The only online donations fees that will be incurred by you are the credit card fees and a bank transaction fee.

You also own all your data - Our Community does not use any of the donor details in any way and our systems have secure encryption for donor protection.
