Mikono Appeal

Mikono Appeal

By: Mikono Association Inc

What is this appeal for?
Mikono Association Inc is a new organisation which aims ot support people living in developing countries to study in a health related field. We aim to financially help people attend university or a training college who may otherwise not be able to afford this. A proviso of the grants we award is that the recipient must pledge to stay in the developing country for a minimum of two years after they graduate. Hence, we are trying to encourage the retention of locally trained health professionals in their country of origin (and in doing so, reverse the "brain drain" that currently exists whereby heath workers in developing countries are lost to the first world).

How will the funds be used?
This appeal is our "launch appeal" as a new organisation. All funds donated go towards grants to help people in developing countries study a health related field. The board of the association is comprised of volunteers, who have pledged to maintain costs at a minimum, in order to see as high a proportion of funds go towards the grants as possible (this number is currently close to 100%). A unique aspect of this Association is that its members are able to attend the Annual General Meeting (held in July in Perth, WA), during which who receives grants is decided. So, those who regularly donate to the charity are able to be part of the decision making process and participate in the function of the charity at a grassroots level. See our website www.buildingbridgesabroad.com for more information.
