Muru Mittigar Aboriginal Welfare Fund Muru Mittigar Aboriginal Welfare Fund
By: Muru Mittigar

What is this appeal for?
Muru Mittigar has as its' major activity the alleviation of poverty amongst the Darug and wider Aboriginal Community of Greater Western Sydney. This activity seeks to engage long term unemployed members of the Aboriginal community in work, providing accredited training and access to counselling in a supportive culturally sensitive environment with an atmosphere of zero tolerance to drug and alcohol abuse.

Our programmes this financial year have injected over $500,000 into the Aboriginal community as wages to Indigenous families whilst providing financial mentoring, assisted many families into private rental through advocacy work, provided access to transportation, and short circuited gambling and illicit drug problems of many Indigenous families through money management counselling and bill paying facilities before ready access to disposable income.

Eligibility for our programmes is determined by Aboriginality, long term unemployed (6 months or longer) and willingness to participate in programmes available. We do not receive any government funding for our activities.

How will the funds be used?

To expand our programme to more families. Western Sydney has the largest population of Aboriginal people in one centre, outside of the Northern Territory. Demand far outstrips supply. Our directors do not benefit financially from sitting on the board, and all staff are renumerated according to the Community Employment Training Services Award including Manager.

Key areas of expenditure for funds donated:
  • Day to day running and expansion of the poverty alleviation programme.
Is this appeal tax deductible? Yes
Will I receive a receipt for my donation? Yes, automatically sent to you by email when approved.
