What is this appeal for?

A True Story

Once upon a time a band of brave people, true in spirit and pure of heart, got together and had a vision; to build the first purpose built environment centre in WA. Through sheer hard work and determination (and the borrowing of a large sum of money) Naragebup came to life and won the 2004 WA Environment Awards in the category of Eco Building. It was also a finalist in the Year of the Built Environment 2004 Exemplar Awards in both Building Regional Communities and Toward Sustainable Communities categories (for more awards nobly won please see our website).

However, although this vision, Naragebup, was now manifest for the past decade had and helped thousands of people each year (approximately 25,000pa) from all walks of life, learn how to help the planet each according to their own abilities, the future of this special place was in jeopardy

How will the funds be used?
Naragebup belongs to the Community, it receives NO core funding either from the local council (despite many requests for assistance with this) or any government department of agency. So, while most environment centres Australia wide enjoy financial patronage from their local city elders Naragebup does not. In fact, Naragebup is in the unique position of actually PAYING their local government authority a considerable sum each year (remember the bit about borrowing a large sum of money?) in order to exist and provide the local community resources, information and services. In 2006 volunteer time alone donated to Naragebup to promote the natural environment is over 28,000 hours (or $560,000.00 worth of time based on $20/hr government standard in-kind rate for volunteer workers).

A true Sustainability Icon Naragebup:

produces 26% of its own power needs

consumes only 1.5% of the water used by a similar sized organisation

manages all its own waste onsite (yep even human 'waste') apart from 6 trailer loads of inorganic waste this is sent to landfill each year (ok so we are not perfect - yet!)

does lots of extraordinary things (please see website for examples)
