Going Green

Reducing the Environmental Impact of your Mail

In line with good corporate responsibility practice, this book was written to provide community groups and businesses with the knowledge they need to reduce the environmental impact of their mail.

It's structured around six stages of the mail lifecycle: managing mailing lists, mail design, paper purchase and use, printing, mail production and response management. The information is supported by interviews with people who work in the industry, a list of resources, acknowledgements and a glossary.

Having read the book, organisations should be able to:

  • minimise waste by keeping mailing lists up to date;
  • know how to talk to designer about achieving the desired 'look' while minimising negative environmental impact;
  • be well - informed about the various paper choices and certifications on the market;
  • understand how printing impacts the environment, and how that impact can be mitigated;
  • understand that attention needs to be paid to addressing mail, and how a mail house can support the reduction of environmental impact; and
  • be aware of environmental issues related to response-management.
