Reef Check International Year of the Reef Appeal Reef Check International Year of the Reef Appeal
By: Reef Check Foundation

What is this appeal for?
2008 has been officially designated as the 2nd International Year of the Reef. This appeal is intended to raise funds to support the Reef Check Australia network in responding to threats to our coral reef ecosystems including climate change by training community volunteers to participate in the long term monitoring of the health of our coral reefs that was initiated in 1997.

Reef Check is the United Nations' official community-based coral reef monitoring program. The network of community volunteers was set up in 1997 in response to the scientific concern over the decline of the world's coral reef ecosystems. Over the past 10 years more than 16% of the world's coral reefs have been lost and many others are severe decline. Coral reefs around the world are a source of food for 100's of millions of people; they are also potential sources of new medicines and support a multi billion dollar tourism industry. Whilst Australia's coral reefs are amongst the best managed in the world they are not immune to the threats of global warming, declining water quality and overfishing.

Reef Check Australia is a part of this global network of volunteers who regularly monitor and report on the health of Australia's coral reefs. Reef Check Australia is an award winning environmental charity that trains community volunteers to actively participate in coral reef conservation. Our volunteers are recreational scuba divers who monitor the health of reefs around Australia and the Indo-Pacific.

Key areas of expenditure for funds donated:
  • To raise public awareness about the global coral reef crisis.
  • To create an Australia-wide network of trained volunteer teams who regularly monitor and report on reef health using a globally standardized scientific method.
  • To make our research data freely and readily available to assist with ecologically and economically sustainable management of Australia's coral reefs.
  • To foster local action and stewardship to protect and sustainably manage Australia's coral reefs for the benefit of future generations .
Is this appeal tax deductible? Yes
Will I receive a receipt for my donation? Yes, automatically sent to you by email when approved.
