Adolescent Mental Health Project
By: Southern Community Welfare

What is this appeal for?
We wish to run 2 innovative pilot programs in 2008 for adolescents. Each of these programs will give both support and education to adolescents on emotional and mental health issues with a particular focus on anger, social competency and deliberate self injury (DSI). These 2 programs are Rock and Water for 10-15 yr old boys and a deliberate self injury (DSI) support group.

Ho w will the funds be used?
To pay facilitators to run each program. To purchase equipment for Rock and Water program. To provide information packs to adolescents in the program.

A little bit more about the program:
J B Healy states that Bullying has become a major focus of concern for a wide range of social organisations. Seen in all walks of life, in the playground and in the workplace, bullying loses its potency in the face of strong self and body awareness, self control and self confidence.

The Rock and Water Program offers boys a new way to interact with their peers and others. Physical exercises are linked with mental and social skills. In this way the program leads from simple, non-combat self defence, boundary and communication exercises to a strong sense of self confidence. Boys can be perpetrators of violence but they can also be victims, that is why they are taught to defend themselves effectively and also to grow more aware of boundaries and the consequences of crossing over them. The Rock and Water program aims to reduce violence, boost self esteem, address anxiety and promote purpose and motivation in boy's lives. By assisting boys in their development to adulthood, we aim to make them conscious of their own power and responsibility within the community and society as a whole.

The goal is to teach boys to truly know themselves, to have a positive sense of their own individual identity, to know how they like to learn and how to have healthy relationships, which will set them up for a confident and grounded experience of life. After an overwhelmingly positive response to our Rock and Water Program for primary school boys, we endeavour to run a pilot program for adolescent boys aged 10-15 yrs. Our 2nd pilot program planned for 2008 is to run a support group for adolescents struggling with deliberate self injury (DSI). The group would be facilitated by professional counsellors with experience in this area. People attending the group would have safe place to talk about how they feel with fellow sufferers and also be counselled in a group format. Our current DSI project supports families, health professionals and health organisations that are experiencing or working with individuals who deliberately self injure. With the expansion of this project, proposed with this appeal, we hope to specifically and more effectively promote the mental health of adolescents.

Key areas of expenditure for funds donated:
  • 2 x Rock and Water Facilitator wages;
  • 1 x DSI trained Counsellor for DSI support group;
  • 1 x social worker experienced in DSI for support group
  • Equipment for Rock and Water (punching pads; gym mats)
  • Providing information packs for attendees.
