Byron Writers Festival is a not-for-profit, member-based organisation offering a year-round program of workshops, seminars and events. One of our key initiatives is our annual literary Festival - the largest of its kind in regional Australia - offering a seven-day program of workshops, special events, schools days, and the main Festival weekend featuring a line-up of over 150 writers and thinkers.
Over the years the most respected contemporary Australian and International writers have participated in Byron Writers Festival through lectures, lunches, panels, conversations, launches and readings. The event attracts high calibre local, national and international literary talent, including luminaries such as Jeanette Winterson, Peter Carey and Helen Garner, and celebrated politicians including Malcolm Fraser and Julia Gillard. Byron Writers Festival also provides a platform for local writers to engage with audiences, meet with publishers and agents and launch works.

The Intent of Byron Writers Festival:

Byron Writers Festival is the central hub to the Northern Rivers’ active, vibrant literary culture of reading and writing. Our primary purpose is to create and deliver programs that involve and enrich professional, amateur and aspiring writers (and readers) of all ages. Our mission is to promote literature (particularly Australian), enhance the skills of writers, and foster a culture of reading and writing among all age groups in the Northern Rivers and beyond.
Services for members include professional mentorships, writing residencies, and networking opportunities.

Recent Accomplishments of Byron Writers Festival:

- In August 2016, Byron Writers Festival marked its 20th year with its strongest and best received program yet, breaking box office records and presenting a festival full of history making moments like Stan Grant’s Thea Astley Lecture that people will continue to talk about for years to come.
- More than 150 writers and thinkers converged on the iconic town of Byron Bay for Australia's largest regional writers' festival.
- Byron Writers Festival 2016 attracted 3,000 people per day to the main festival (x3 days, 4-6 August); 3,600 children to school events; and 2,000 people to workshops and special events.
- In 2016 Byron Writers Festival created StoryBoard - a travelling creative writing workshop bringing leading authors and illustrators into schools in the Northern Rivers, NSW. The program is aimed at fostering the next generation of readers and writers – young people who are excited about literature, literacy and creativity, who seek the tools to create their futures.
