About the role

Music For Canberra (MFC) is a not for profit community music provider, offering music lessons and ensembles to a broad range of clients including children from 18 months, those living with disability, through to seniors and includes the Canberra Youth Orchestra. As a not-for-profit Key Arts Organisation supported by artsACT and the Snow Foundation, Music For Canberra encourages people of any age and ability to experience the benefits of music.

The Board

The Board supports the work of Music for Canberra by providing leadership and strategic governance. The day-to-day operations are led by our General Manager and a small team. The relationship between staff, volunteers and Board members is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected.

The Job of Board Secretary

The Board Secretary supports the governance and administrative functions of Music for Canberra and works closely with the Chair of the Board. As the organization continues to grow and make a positive impact in the community, the Board Secretary will contribute to the effective functioning of the Board, ensuring that meetings are well-organized, records are accurately maintained and communications flow smoothly.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare agendas, board packs, venues and notices for monthly Board Meetings, annual Strategy Meetings and Annual General Meetings (AGM), in partnership with the Chair of the Board.
  • Create and circulate meeting minutes and action items to Board members.
  • Actively contribute to strategic planning and Board discussions.
  • Act as the Public Officer for the organisation.
  • Support human resources processes, including onboarding and offboarding of Board members.
  • Support processes to ensure governance compliance is met including statutory annual reporting.

Specific Skills

  • Governance and Board Secretary experience are highly desirable.
  • Experience in the arts, performance and not-for-profit sector or similar roles would be valued but are not a prerequisite.

We are seeking a Canberra based Board Secretary. This is a voluntary role, supporting a skilled based Board.
