Help create paid opportunities for artists and become part of the global fringe movement!
We support independent artists and promote independent arts in the Newcastle region through the production of an annual fringe festival. The Newcastle Fringe is a festival of performing arts inspired by the success of other Australian and international fringe festivals. We seek to highlight independent artists and enhance Newcastle's reputation as a cultural city by assembling a quality, diverse, open access program of theatre, music, cabaret, children shows, comedy, dance, physical theatre, performance art, stand up comedy, spoken word and busking.
Since registration as an incorporated association and charity in 2018, we have experienced year on year growth of 50% in attendance.
As a member of the Committee and an Office Bearer, the Treasurer will:
- Monitor and review the financial administration and sustainability of Newcastle Fringe Festival, including by:
- Oversee and participate in the preparation of the annual budget
- Financial budgeting and reporting of performance against budget;
- Ensure that Newcastle Fringe Festival’s financial control procedures are sound and effective including by maintaining up to date and accurate records; and
- Monitor finances to ensure financial accountability by the organisation.
- Direct and oversee services provided by a contracted bookkeeper.
- Contribute to the financial and budgeting aspects of NFP grant applications and acquittals.
- Monitor and ensure regulatory compliance, in particular, requirements under the ACNC Act for registered charities, Accounting Standards and requirements for DGRs.

- Report to the Committee with quarterly finance and risk reports and about the financial administration of the organisation to assist the Committee Members to understand the financial information, the organisation’s financial performance and any risks or non-compliance issues.
- Attend all Committee meetings well prepared having read and understood all papers beforehand.

Mandatory Requirements
- Connection with Newcastle Fringe Festival’s mission: Demonstrates a strong commitment to empowering artists and supporting the Newcastle arts’ community.
- Relevant tertiary and professional qualifications (e.g. CPA certification): demonstrated technical knowledge and/or professional skills in one or more of the following: accounting, finance; risk management; governance and/or audit.
- Collaborative and inclusive leadership style: Demonstrates a collaborative, respectful, and inclusive leadership approach and ensures that decisions are made in the best interest of the organisation and its stakeholders.
- Strategic thinking: Demonstrable experience in strategic thinking, business analysis and business planning.
- Communications skills: Demonstrates strong written and verbal communication skills and fosters robust and transparent communication and accountability across the board.
Desirable Requirements
- Hold an AICD Company Directors course qualification (or equivalent).
- Experience on similar governance committees in the not-for-profit and/or public sector.
- Skills in the following areas would be well regarded: Commercial business acumen, risk management, financial management, income generation, ability to advocate to funders and stakeholders, marketing, social media or law.
Time Commitment:
- Meetings are held at least 4 times per annum with additional Board discussions taking place approx. 4 times per annum. These meeting typically take place in person.
- Our festival is held annually in March. Although we prepare for the festival year-round, there will be an increased time commitment in February, March and April.
