About Us
Perth Racing (the trading name of the Western Australian Turf Club) is the premier thoroughbred racing club in WA, operating both Ascot and Belmont Park racecourses. As a multi-faceted racing, entertainment and event business, we stage around 90 meetings per year, including the high-profile Melbourne Cup Day at Ascot, Perth Cup, The Quokka and The Pinnacles series.
Perth Racing is seeking a commercially astute Director to guide the Club in an exciting new chapter. With a strategic plan in place and a renewed focus on commercialisation of its diversified assets and significant land holdings, this is a unique Board opportunity.
Perth Racing is looking for an experienced leader who can help guide the Club to unlock commercial opportunities, champion the brand with government agencies and local councils and deliver long term value to our Members, partners and stakeholders.
The Board is responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of Perth Racing and for delivering accountable organisational performance in accordance with the Club’s purpose, objects, values and strategies. In performing its role, the specific responsibilities reserved to the Board include:
- provision and delivery of agreed strategic ambitions, in conjunction with the CEO;
- monitoring the operational and financial position and performance of the Club;
- assuring a prudential and ethical base to the Club’s conduct and activities consistent with the Club’s adopted values and having regard to the relevant interests of its stakeholders;
- assuring the principal risks faced by the Club are identified and overseeing that appropriate control and monitoring systems are in place to manage the impact of these risks;
- reviewing and approving the Club’s internal compliance and control systems and codes of conduct;
- approving the Club’s budgets and business plans and monitoring major capital expenditures, acquisitions and divestitures, and capital management generally;
- ensuring that the Club’s financial results are appropriately and accurately reported on in a timely manner in accordance with regulatory requirements;
- as part of its oversight and monitoring function, overseeing that the Club’s governance systems and processes are designed and applied to assure compliance with all relevant laws, governmental regulations and accounting standards;
- ensuring that the Club’s affairs are conducted with prudential governance transparency and accountability;
- overseeing Member engagement, reporting and information flows.
Preferred Skills and Experience
We welcome applications from individuals with diverse professional backgrounds. The following areas of expertise are particularly valuable, given the Club’s strategic ambitions:
- Strong commercial financial acumen, with a proven track record of driving financial sustainability and strategic growth
- Ability to identify and assess investment opportunities and partnerships, particularly in the property development space
- Understanding of risk management, compliance, and governance within a complex environment, ideally with prior Board or c-suite experience
- Experience in government relations and communication
Term of Appointment
This is a voluntary position with a three-year term, commencing upon appointment by the Board of Directors.
Knowledge of the thoroughbred horseracing industry, whilst beneficial, is not essential. These roles are designed to bring independent, non-affiliated perspectives to the Board.
