Join Our Board – Make a Lasting Impact on the Future of Young People
Are you a commercially savvy, or legally skilled and looking to give back to the community in a meaningful way?
This role is suited to someone who is not only strategic but willing to be hands-on at times, helping us promote our programs, build brand awareness, attract funding, and engage with our sponsors, partners and community.
About Us
Young Australia League (YAL) is the oldest organisation supporting young people in WA (120 this year!). We are dedicated to supporting disadvantaged, young people, across Australia to stay engaged in education, build resilience, and reach their full potential. We work alongside schools, families, and communities to create pathways that empower young people and break the cycle of disadvantage.
We’re also proud to be different. Alongside our core work, we own a commercial business where every dollar earned is reinvested into programs that support and empower young people. Our model proves that profit can drive purpose — creating real, lasting impact without relying solely on grants.
Following the recent retirement of a long-standing board member, we are currently seeking an enthusiastic and values-aligned individuals to join our Board of Directors. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute your expertise and play a vital role in shaping the future direction of our organisation.
We are a progressive board who are making some bold, yet positive decisions that will keep us going for another 120 years! We have a solid strategy and are in a robust financial position.
We are particularly looking for Directors with:
- Commercial acumen – A strong understanding of business and finance to help guide sustainable growth and effective decision-making. You may be an accountant, but you definitely don’t need to be.
- Legal expertise – Experience in legal, compliance, or governance, with the ability to help navigate regulatory obligations and strengthen our organisational integrity. An understanding of trusts or business acquisition would also be valued.
Plus:
- Demonstrated emotional intelligence, with an understanding of how to contribute to an environment where all board members feel safe to speak up, offer differing views, challenge ideas and contribute to a high performing, collaborative board environment.
- A willingness to participate in board evaluations, training, and reflection to enhance board performance and maintain a high standard of governance.
- Qualifications or training through AICD, GIA or similar would be ideal but not a mandatory requirement.
Key Responsibilities
- Uphold the values, mission, and strategic objectives of YAL.
- Provide strategic oversight and governance in line with our mission and values through contribution at board meetings and committees.
- Support the Executive with high-level advice, with a focus on your area of expertise.
- Act as an ambassador for our work with young people across Australia.
- Help ensure our long-term sustainability and social impact.
- Leverage your professional and personal networks to open doors to new partnerships, funding opportunities, and strategic relationships that support the organisation’s growth and impact.
Commitments
- Active engagement and attendance at Board meetings (in person or via Teams).
- Board meetings are held 9 times a year in Perth, with the option to attend virtually if interstate or when needed.
- Ongoing support and input between meetings including at least 1 committee appointment (estimated 2-5 hours/month).
- Attendance at key events and strategy meetings (One strategy weekend annually with travel and accommodation covered for interstate directors)
