Any further information about this vacancy:

The Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA) is the premier drag racing sanctioning body of Australia.  It is officially recognised as the controlling body of drag racing in Australia by Motorsport Australia and is a foundation member of the Drag Racing Commission of the Federation Internationale de I’Automobile (FIA).  ANDRA enjoys a healthy relationship with drag racing bodies around the world and is a founding member of the Australian Motorsports Council.

Established in 1973 from a drag racing-oriented faction of the original Australian Hot Rod Federation, ANDRA has a history spanning 50 years.  ANDRA’s vision is to be the most respected and successful Motorsport in Australia with its purpose to preserve and promote the sport of drag racing, whilst growing the sport and improving safety.  It sanctions races at all levels, from Top Fuel to Junior Dragster, held on temporary tracks, at regional venues as well as international standard facilities in capital cities.

ANDRA is owned by its members with profits benefiting members, and relies significantly on a volunteer-based workforce, organised through Divisional Councils operating across five regions nationally.  Notably, ANDRA and its members make drag racing a family friendly, safer sport.

What we do is underpinned by our objectives:

  • To coordinate and administratively control all facets of drag racing in Australia and to instigate and enforce rules needed to do so,
  • To encourage and assist any organiser in the progressive and honest promotion of ANDRA drag racing,
  • To protect the sport and its participants from harmful exploitation and unfair or dishonest promotion,
  • To encourage and assist activity designed to foster a good relationship between the public and the sport, and
  • To increase knowledge and acceptance of the sport by the public.

The Board:

ANDRA is governed by a seven-member Board who are the directors of the ANDRA. The Board oversees the financial, legal and business operations of the organisation and is supported in its activities by the Division Councils and a range of committees.

The ANDRA Board of Directors are elected and appointed in accordance with the processes set out in the Constitution, with the Independent Board Directors appointed by the Board.

Board comprises:

  • 3 Division Directors
  • 2 representatives of the Australian Drag Racers Promoters Association
  • 2 Independent Directors

The role:

ANDRA is seeking expressions of interest for an Independent Board Director to join its Board. The role is an opportunity to contribute your governance expertise to an organisation with over 50 years of history, focused upon building our membership base, financial sustainability and furthering the sport of drag racing.

Our board members act in a voluntary capacity for a 2-year term with possibility for serving up to 3 two-year terms if reappointed at the end of each term. The Independent Director will attend, participate and vote in meetings of the ANDRA Board and bring external independent view to Board discussions based on their specific skills and experience.

Key Responsibilities:

The primary function of the Board is to provide corporate and strategic governance to the ANDRA and be responsible for the effective administration and control of drag racing in Australia.

It is not the Director’s role to take part in the day-to-day management of the organisation.

In addition to the responsibilities outlined in the Board Charter, the Independent Board Director has the following responsibilities:

  • To attend all Board meetings
  • To support the ANDRA Board by drawing upon their specific skills and experience.
  • To engage and effectively communicate with members, staff and other stakeholders.
  • To participate as a member of ANDRA committees in accordance with their respective terms of reference
  • To be fully conversant with the business of ANDRA and with its legal and statutory obligations

With approximately 8 board meetings held each year, both face-to-face and online, attendance at all scheduled meetings is essential. To support full participation in board activities, ANDRA will cover reasonable travel expenses incurred by the Independent Director in attending face to face board meetings.

Key Selection Criteria:

To support ANDRA’s continuous commitment to good governance and compliance with its Code of Conduct, the Independent Board Director must:

  • Have demonstrated expertise in governance or corporate strategy, with a strong understanding of fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Preferably have legal, business development, corporate partnerships and fundraising or governance background.
  • Have previous experience as a Board Director in a not-for-profit, sporting or membership-based organisation, ensuring familiarity with governance best practices.

To Apply:

Interested candidates must submit:

  • A cover letter outlining their qualifications, experience, and motivation for applying.
  • A current CV, detailing relevant governance and board experience.
  • A statement addressing the selection criteria.
