Plant Trust (GPCAA Inc.) aims to protect diversity in our garden plants by supporting identification and registration of collections of plants held in Australian private gardens, garden societies and clubs, botanic gardens, commercial nurseries, parks, historic estates and wherever enthusiasts have developed and maintain a significant representation of a plant genus or grouping.

Position Description – Treasurer

The Treasurer is responsible for overseeing the financial health and sustainability of the organisation. This role provides strategic financial oversight, ensures sound financial governance, and works closely with the Committee of Management to manage and protect the organisation’s resources. The Treasurer is supported in their function by the Administrative Officer.

What you will do

i. Financial oversight

  • Monitor financial performance to ensure alignment with the organisation’s budget and strategic priorities.
  • Present timely, accurate financial reports (e.g. income statements, balance sheets, cash flow) to the Committee.

ii. Budgeting and planning

  • Lead the development of the annual budget in collaboration with the Committee.
  • Provide financial advice to support effective decision-making and long-term planning.

iii. Financial record keeping

  • Work with the Administrative Officer to maintain up-to-date and accurate financial records.
  • Ensure secure storage and easy access to key financial documents.

iv. Governance and compliance

  • Ensure compliance with financial regulations, reporting obligations, and accounting standards (e.g. ACNC or Consumer Affairs Victoria).
  • Prepare and distribute quarterly financial reports and annual financial statements to the Committee.

v. Risk management

  • Monitor financial risks and implement strategies to eliminate or reduce them.
  • Ensure the organisation maintains adequate insurance cover and financial reserves.

vi. Resource and asset management

  • Provide advice on funding opportunities and assist with fundraising initiatives.
  • Ensure appropriate controls are in place for managing income, expenses, and organisational assets.
  • Maintain and regularly update the organisation’s asset register.

What you will bring

  • Financial literacy – confident managing all aspects of finances including planning, banking, reporting, and compliance, with a solid understanding of financial regulations.
  • Governance insight – understanding of nonprofit governance and the principles that underpin ethical, transparent financial management.
  • Strategic thinking – ability to take a long-term view while handling day-to-day financial tasks and challenges.
  • Communication skills – capable of clearly presenting financial information to both financial and non-financial audiences.
  • Diplomacy – comfortable working with diverse stakeholders and contributing to collaborative decision-making.
  • Problem-solving – able to address financial challenges such as cash flow management, forecasting, and budgeting with a solutions-focused mindset.
  • Organisational skills – strong time management, attention to detail, and the ability to juggle competing priorities.
  • Regulatory knowledge – familiarity with bookkeeping standards and relevant laws and regulations (e.g. the ACNC Act 2012 and Regulations 2022).

Appointment and term

The Treasurer is appointed for a 1-year term (until September 2026), with the possibility of reappointment in accordance with the organisation’s Constitution.
