The Australian Medical Students’ Association Limited (AMSA) is a not-for-profit membership organisation, the peak representative body for Australia’s 19,000 future doctors. Led by passionate medical student volunteers, AMSA advocates on behalf of students and the general public in matters relating to health and wellbeing, facilitates national student-run initiatives, and connects students through major events. Its flagship National Convention attracts over 800 students and high-profile speakers from across the globe. AMSA meets regularly with stakeholders including the federal government, Medical Board of Australia, Australian Medical Council, Australian Medical Association, and specialty medical colleges.
About the opportunity
AMSA is seeking 2 independent directors to join its Board of Directors to support and shape the growth of the company.
Historically, AMSA’s Board of Directors has been member-elected, and all current directors are medical students or doctors albeit from a range of backgrounds. In recognition of the company’s continued growth, the company has expanded its Board to include appointed directors in order to bring fresh perspectives, new ideas and diverse skills into the company.
We welcome all applications, and are particularly interested in hearing from those with one or more of:
- Experience in company governance and compliance
- Skills in strategic financial planning and monitoring financial performance
- Legal understanding or training
- Previous board experience or formal training in governance
As a director, you will join a dynamic and energetic company run by passionate, committed and capable volunteers, at a time of growth for the company, with the opportunity to significantly shape the evolution of the company.
The opportunity to serve as chair of the Board, Audit & Risk Committee, or Nominations Committee may arise.
Expected commitment
Directors attend monthly Board meetings (by videoconference) and serve on at least one Board committee. Board meetings run approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours, and are held monthly on a schedule determined by the Board, typically on weekday evenings or on weekends. Key updates between meetings are communicated via email or Slack chat.
The expected commitment is approximately 4 hours per month, comprising meeting attendance and preparation, and out-of-meeting information and decisions.
