Volunteer Position Board Director - Youth Coalition of the ACT

Organisation

The Youth Coalition of the ACT (Youth Co.) is a not-for-profit peak body organisation that leads advocacy for matters affecting young people and those who support them within the ACT. Our vision is for an ACT community that values and provides opportunity, participation, justice, and equity for all young people. The Youth Co. undertakes policy development, sector development, research and evaluation, advocacy, and representation activities to improve outcomes for young people their families and the sector that supports them. We are responsible for representing and promoting the rights, interests, and well-being of the estimated 78,000 young Canberrans aged 12-25 years and those who support them. Position

The Board is seeking nomination for volunteer Board Director positions, with positions starting on 25 November following our Annual General Meeting. Board terms are for two years, with members being eligible to renominate for up to three consecutive terms.

All Board members assist in overseeing the organisation's strategic direction and governance as well as provide support and guidance to the Chief Executive Officer and a high-performing team to execute their duties. Board meetings are held online and in person, 6 times per year. Each Board Director is required to engage in at least one subcommittee which meets monthly or bimonthly. The average time commitments for Board Directors is approximately ten hours a month, depending on workload and Board position.

  • Role model professional, supportive, inspiring, and respectful behaviour to all internal and external stakeholders and community
  • Demonstrate commitment to the organisation’s purpose, values, and principles.
  • Work in partnership with the Board Chair, Executive Committee, other Directors, and the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Ensure regular attendance and active participation during Board meetings.
  • Be accountable to Members, funders, service users, youth sector, broader service system and young people for the decisions and actions of the Board and be open to public scrutiny.
  • Actively support and participate in the organisation’s income development initiatives and ensure that all requirements of funding agreements are met.
  • Be a member of and/or Chair of a Sub-Committee/working group as required.
  • Attend board meetings (hybrid), subcommittee meetings (online), and attend an annual board planning and induction day (in person).

About you

The Youth Coalition Board utilises a skills matrix to determine specific areas we would like to target recruitment for each year. This year, we are primarily seeking expressions of interest from individuals with demonstrated expertise and experience in one or more of the following specific areas:

  • Governance/Board experience
  • Law – commercial or NFP
  • Accounting/finance
  • Risk Management

Any eligible individual member can nominate for a position. You can apply for membership when you submit an EOI for a board position.

Selection Criteria

  • Prior board or governance experience is desirable
  • Experience and/or skills in the above-mentioned areas (law, finance/accounting, risk management)
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently or as part of a team, exercising initiative and judgement.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Renumeration

This is a volunteer board position.
