Reconciliation Tasmania is wishing to recruit two new Directors onto its Board. Applications for these positions are sought from both Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal people who reside in Tasmania.

 This is an excellent leadership opportunity for committed individuals to  join an established Board with an outstanding CEO who are working to vision a new future for Tasmania where Aboriginal people can take their rightful place.

 

About Reconciliation Tasmania

 

Reconciliation Tasmania is a not-for-profit community and member-based organisation

providing leadership, education and support to people and organisations in Tasmania

committed to lasting, meaningful change with and for Tasmanian Aboriginal people. We are the state reconciliation council for Tasmania, and a member of the Australian Reconciliation Network led by Reconciliation Australia.

 

Through our programs, services and networks, we actively promote a deeper understanding, respect and justice with and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Our work centres on truth-telling, recognition of sovereignty, and supporting self-determination by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, with a particular focus on Tasmanian Aboriginal people.

Our programs and services are funded from a variety of sources including government, sponsors and philanthropic support, and revenue from our facilitation services and membership fees.The offices of Reconciliation Tasmania are situated on the Sandy Bay campus of the University of Tasmania.

 

The Board of Reconciliation Tasmania

The Reconciliation Council of Tasmania Ltd has been operating as a limited company and registered not-for-profit entity since 2017.

As a registered public company limited by guarantee, Reconciliation Tasmania is subject to the Corporations Act. It is a not-for-profit organisation and is registered with and regulated by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). The Role of the Board of Reconciliation Tasmania

 

In fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities, the  Board of Reconciliation Tasmania:

 

 

  • Provides and monitors the strategic direction of Reconciliation Tasmania, ensuring the development of the Strategic Plan.
  • Sets and monitors the cultural direction and expectations around behaviours and decision-making within Reconciliation Tasmania.
  • Monitors, evaluates and reviews the operational and financial position and performance of Reconciliation Tasmania.
  • Approves the budgets and CEO’s Annual Plan ensuring adequate, accurate and timely information being provided to the Board.
  • Oversees the design and review of policies, associated processes and codes of conduct, ensuring alignment to legal compliance responsibilities.
  • Identifies, monitors and mitigates against risks to Reconciliation Tasmania.
  • Reviews and approves internal compliance and control systems and codes of conduct.
  • Appoints and oversees the CEO and evaluates the performance of the CEO receiving reports on the performance of Reconciliation Tasmania’s strategies and objectives and their attainment.
  • Ensures that the organisation’s financial results are appropriately and accurately reported in a timely manner.
  • Monitors and reviews member and stakeholder engagement.
  • Ensures sound board succession planning including strategies to ensure the board is comprised of individuals who are able to meet the responsibilities of directors of the organisation.

The Finance, Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee

The Board has one committee at this stage of its development which is the Finance, Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee. The Committee has comprehensive Terms of Reference and a role statement which includes the responsibility for the sound management of the organisation’s finances, auditing and financial reporting to the Board as well as organisational risk and compliance.

The Committee makes recommendations to the Reconciliation Tasmania Board but has no authority to make decisions on behalf of the Board. 

 

 

Board Membership

 

Board members are volunteers who are deeply committed to addressing social injustice.  They work to  also undertake ongoing learning about the invasion and colonisation of Tasmania, the impact of structural marginalisation and racism, intergenerational  trauma and the culture and achievements of Tasmanian Aboriginal people. As well as attending and contributing to meetings and decision-making, when available, Board members:

 

  • Support local and state reconciliation activities through their presence
  • Support Reconciliation Tasmania member initiatives
  • Represent Reconciliation Tasmania at key events such as the launch of Reconciliation Action Plans by organisations
  • Attend National Reconciliation Week events and NAIDOC Week events.

 

Skills and Qualities Sought

 

The Board has a comprehensive skills matrix. Directors currently have strong backgrounds in leadership, management, education, legal expertise and land and resource management.

 

The Board is wishing to recruit two new Directors. One is a Board Treasurer with an Accounting / Finance background. It is envisaged that the Treasurer will chair the Finance Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee, once they are established within the Board. The Finance Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee meets 4-5 times per year. (see the Treasurer role. Appendix 1)

 

The Board is also seeking  another new Director with  experience in one or more of the following areas:

 

  • Contemporary governance and strategic planning
  • Marketing/Communications
  • Funding and/or Philanthropy
  • Community engagement

 

Applicants need to be eligible for appointment as a Director on the Board of Reconciliation Tasmania .

 

Term of Office

 

Directors hold office from the date of their appointment to the date three (3) years following. At the conclusion of their term, the Board may re-appoint them for a further term. An Appointed Director can only serve a maximum of nine years as a Director.

All Board members of Reconciliation Tasmania have a deep commitment to the achievement of social justice for  and with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Peoples. The following attributes are valued in Board members:

 

  • Experience and knowledge in advancing the social justice agenda in Tasmania
  • Commitment to champion and advocate social justice publicly
  • Commitment to networking and community engagement
  • Commitment to facilitate, speak and yarn to support Reconciliation Tasmania (with appropriate briefing / background)

Reconciliation Tasmania Board members  have  a number of shared beliefs and shared personal qualities. They value the volunteerism of each other, ongoing learning, critical thinking and are respectful of different perspectives. The Board specifically values:

  • Self-awareness

 

Board Meetings

 

The Board meeting schedule is developed collaboratively and finalised by the October of the preceding year to maximize full attendance.

Board meetings were held eight times per year in 2025. Four are quarterly face-to-face meetings on Saturday 10.00 am - 2.30 pm (with remote access available) and with a working lunch. Face-to-face meetings are spread across Launceston and Hobart (on a two-year cycle, one meeting is held in the northwest, commenced in 2025). Four Zoom Meetings are gazetted on a Thursday for 1.5 hours from 5.00 - 6.30 pm.

Annual planning takes place in one of the face-to face meetings. One face-to-face meeting involves a professional learning session on effective governance. Meetings are not normally gazetted during December and January.

The regular inclusion of an in-camera session in the agenda allows directors to raise or explore any issues of concern or clarification without the presence of the CEO.

Director Induction

The Board and CEO will provide new Directors with a thorough induction in the affairs of both the Board and Reconciliation Tasmania.

Prior to attendance at their first Board meeting, new Directors will:

  • Receive a copy of the Constitution, the Board Charter, Delegations of Authority and other relevant legal governance documentation, current and recent Board Minutes, contact details for other Directors and staff and the current year’s meeting schedule.
  • Meet with the Co-Chairs for a governance familiarisation. The meeting may be held as a group session or with individuals either face-to-face or virtually.
  • Meet with the CEO for an operational familiarisation.

Director Development

The Board of Reconciliation Tasmania is committed to the development of the Board. This is undertaken through the process of helping Directors gain access to resources that enable them to improve their individual and collective performance and effectiveness as Directors.

This can be through sharing best practices and undertaking specific training for continual improvement.
