About the role
MfC is a non-profit community organisation offering a variety of programs for people of all abilities to take up an instrument or singing and experience the benefits music can offer. We offer group instrumental tuition, as well as the opportunity to take part in ensembles. We have choirs for children as well as an orchestra program that includes the Canberra Youth Orchestra. We also offer mixed ability classes to those living with a disability.
The Board
The Board supports the work of Music for Canberra by providing leadership and strategic governance. The day-to-day operations are led by our General Manager and a small team. The relationship between staff, volunteers and Board members is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected.
The commitment is 10 hours per month with monthly Board meetings. Board members are expected to participate in at least one Board Committee.
The Job of Board Treasurer
MfC is seeking a Treasurer to join the Board and play a critical role in overseeing the financial health and sustainability of the organisation. You will be required to provide strategic financial oversight and work closely with the Board and Management.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor MfC’s financial performance, ensuring it aligns with the budget and strategic goals.
- Present accurate financial reports to the Board, including income statements, balance sheets and cash flow statements.
- Lead the development of the annual budget in collaboration with the Board and Management.
- Provide financial advice to the Board to support sound decision making and strategic planning.
- Ensure compliance with Australian Charity and Not For Profit Commission (ACNC), financial regulations, accounting standards and other reporting obligations.
- Oversee the preparation and submission of Audited Financial Statements and Annual Reports.
- Monitor risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.
- Ensure the organisation maintains adequate insurance and reserves.
- Provide advice and support fundraising efforts including grants and philanthropy.
- Ensure proper controls and processes are in place to manage income, expenses, and assets.
Specific Skills
- Financial literacy, budgeting skills, and understanding of financial regulations.
- Experience with risk oversight.
- Desirable - Formal qualifications in Accounting or Finance.
