ABOUT VILLAGE SCHOOL – A small school with a big heart. 

Established in 1982, Village School in Croydon North is a small, independent, democratic primary school nestled on eight leafy acres in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.  

We believe children learn best through play, exploration, and real-life experiences. Our approach encourages curiosity, creativity, and independence—both in the classroom and out in nature.  We support primary school children to learn in a supportive, caring environment under the guidance of our highly qualified and dedicated staff. 

We are a school with a difference.  With abundant outdoor spaces, animals to care for, and hands-on projects, learning at Village School goes beyond books and screens. We celebrate each child’s individuality while fostering resilience, responsibility, resourcefulness, respect, cooperation, and a strong sense of belonging in the wider world. 

We are seeking reliable and conscientious individuals to become members of our school Board.  We seek people with a genuine belief in our values, mission and vision to be at the forefront of progressive education.   Village School is a Victorian incorporated association and an ACNC registered, not-for-profit charity.   Village School is a child safe organisation. 

We are seeking expressions of interest from individuals with exceptional skills and expertise in the following areas:  

  • Accounting and Financial Management  
  • Law and Governance  
  • Strategic Planning  
  • Marketing and Communications  
  • Information Technology 
  • Fundraising and Grants  
  • Property and Facilities management  
  • Project Management 
  • Risk Management including Cyber Risks and Occupational, Health and Safety.  

 We currently have a casual vacancy for a suitably qualified Treasurer.   

The candidates selected for Board positions will the need to join our Association and nominate for an elected Board position in our upcoming election in May 2026.  An eligible candidate must be a “fit and proper” person within the meaning of Schedule 4 of the Education and Training Reform Regulations 2017 (Vic) and submit a current police check  

Office-bearer Board positions are either elected or appointed for a two-year term. Ordinary members are elected for a one-year term.  Board members have the option to re-stand for election. 

 A Village School Board Member is a volunteer role and requires a willingness to commit to the time required undertake assigned tasks, prepare for and attend monthly Board meetings, currently held online on the fourth Tuesday of the month after business hours, and contribute to any relevant subcommittees.  Board members also need to be aware of the importance of their legal, ethical and fiduciary obligations to the Association.  

 Contributing to the Village School Board offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the advancement of progressive education for primary school aged children as we continue our commitment to excellence and innovation in education in our unique democratic school setting.  

Our Board members play a critical role in shaping the strategic direction of Village School.  

Eligibility criteria – interested candidates should meet the following criteria:   

  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the specified skill areas.  
  • Be willing to apply to become a member of Village School Incorporated, nominate and stand for election and meet our Board member eligibility requirements. 
  • Commitment to the ethos of Village School and our values, mission and vision. 
  • Have the willingness, flexibility, dedication and be able to commit the necessary time to actively participate in Board meetings and any relevant subcommittee meetings, undertake required tasks and contribute to Village School’s strategic direction.  
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills.  
  • Be capable of honest, intelligent, collaborative, and respectful debate.
