About the Organisation
Wayahead – Mental Health Association NSW is a long-standing leader in mental health promotion dedicated to improving community wellbeing and reducing stigma and discrimination.
For more than 90 years, Wayahead has played a pioneering role in mental health promotion through community education, public awareness initiatives and sector partnerships. The organisation is widely recognised for delivering Mental Health Month in NSW and for developing programs and resources that support individuals, communities and workplaces to promote positive mental health and wellbeing.
Wayahead is entering a new phase of strategic growth, with a focus on scaling programs, strengthening brand visibility, increasing advocacy impact and expanding philanthropic and partnership opportunities.
The Opportunity
The Board of Wayahead – Mental Health Association NSW is seeking to appoint an experienced Non-Executive Director with senior marketing and/or public relations expertise to complement the skills and experience of the current Board.
This appointment will strengthen the Board’s capability in areas including:
- Brand strategy, development and positioning
- Strategic communications and public engagement
- Private sector partnerships and engagement
- Stakeholder engagement, influence and advocacy.
The successful candidate will contribute strategic insight to support the organisation’s continued growth, visibility and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
Directors share collective responsibility for:
- Providing strategic oversight and strong governance of the organisation
- Contributing to the development and monitoring of organisational strategy
- Ensuring sound financial stewardship and risk oversight
- Supporting and overseeing the Chief Executive Officer
- Upholding the organisation’s mission, values and reputation
- Contributing to stakeholder engagement and sector partnerships where appropriate.
Desirable Experience
- Corporate or startup leadership experience
- Previous Not-for-Profit Board or governance experience
- Experience in entrepreneurship, philanthropy or partnership development
- Familiarity with the mental health ecosystem
- Personal lived or living experience of mental health challenges
Board Commitment
The Board meets approximately five times per year, with meetings typically lasting 2–2.5 hours. Directors are expected to review meeting papers in advance and actively contribute to discussions and decision-making.
Directors may also be invited to participate in Board Committees, such as:
- Finance, Audit and Risk Committee
- Anxiety Disorders Advisory Committee
- Lived Experience Advisory Committee
Committee participation generally requires an additional 2–3 hours per quarter.
An annual Board and staff strategic planning day is held to review progress and set priorities. Directors are also encouraged to attend key Wayahead events such as the Mental Health Matters Awards and support advocacy activities.
