1 in 8 Australians is the unpaid carer for a family member or friend

In Queensland that’s over 600,000 carers and many of them are young people. Even kids who are still at school. Being a carer is tough, frequently unremitting and mostly unpaid. So, who cares for the carers?

This invaluable peak body does!  Representing unpaid carers in Queensland since 1989, it works to improve the lives of these irreplaceable individuals - and the people for whom they care.

Since 1989, this nonprofit has been there, to listen, recognise, support and fight for stronger recognition of carers’ roles in society. Striving for systemic change, equitable and inclusive support, it plays a critical role in policy advocacy, service delivery and system navigation for carers across disability, aged care and community services.

Although it operates in a complex, often-changing environment, the organisation is well run and financially stable. But now, as it’s about to enter a new phase of growth and governance maturity, there is a need to expand the scope of this excellent Board, initially by adding three experienced, non-executive Directors with specific skills.

The priority skill sets sought collectively across the three new Directorships are:

  • People & Culture / Human Resources – workforce strategy, IR, culture, psychosocial safety
  • IT Management - data governance, cyber security, emerging technologies, AI
  • Education & Training – adult education, RTO operations, commercial sustainability

Of course, you’re not expected to be expert in all of these. Expertise with significant experience in just the one discipline is more than enough. Especially if you can add a familiarity with government funding and tender environments, plus a good grasp of your fiduciary duties, risk and organisational oversight as a Director in a complex, regulated environment.

Special attributes will add lustre to your application

We’re especially keen to hear from experienced Directors from culturally diverse backgrounds who are located in regional Queensland – ideally Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Rockhampton.

You will need to have lived or had close experience of caring roles in multifaceted situations, such as disability or aged care and be able to tell us your unique story.  Strong leadership, a reputation for productive collaboration and your willingness to engage out of session will all add lustre to your application.

If you are a Director intending to serve just one (new) Board this year, consider the extraordinary impact this one has on people at all ages as they provide tender care to relatives and friends. They truly deserve your support.
