Divers for Climate is a national, non-profit organisation mobilising the dive community for ocean and climate action. We work across industry, community and policy to ensure those closest to the ocean help shape climate solutions. Our mission is a climate-resilient dive community in a thriving ocean. We are community-led and values-driven, with a network of over 6,000 divers, tourism operators and ocean advocates across Australia.
The Opportunity
Divers for Climate is entering an exciting new phase of growth and impact. We are seeking a highly engaged and strategic Board Chair to lead the Board and support the organisation to scale its impact nationally.
This is a pivotal leadership role, ideal for someone who is passionate about climate and ocean outcomes and brings strong governance experience, along with the ability to open doors to philanthropy, fundraising and corporate partnerships.
About the Role
The Chair is responsible for providing leadership to the Board, ensuring effective governance, and acting as a key ambassador for Divers for Climate. The Chair plays a critical role in supporting the CEO, driving strategic focus, and helping attract resources, partnerships and opportunities to support the organisation’s growth and position Divers for Climate for long-term success.
Key Responsibilities
Board Leadership & Governance
- Lead and facilitate effective Board meetings, ensuring strong decision-making and accountability
- Set the tone for a high-performing, collaborative and engaged Board culture
- Ensure the Board fulfils its governance responsibilities, including strategy, risk, compliance and performance oversight
- Support ongoing Board development, succession planning and skills-based recruitment
Fundraising, Partnerships & External Relations
- Leverage networks and influence to help identify and open doors to potential major donors and partners
- Act as an ambassador for Divers for Climate, representing the organisation with key stakeholders
- Support and strengthen the organisation’s profile and credibility nationally
CEO Support & Oversight
- Provide support, guidance and performance oversight to the CEO
- Act as a trusted partner and sounding board to the CEO while maintaining appropriate governance boundaries
What We’re Looking For
We are seeking a Chair with a combination of governance leadership and growth-oriented experience, ideally including:
- Senior leadership and/or Board Chair experience in a nonprofit, social enterprise, or purpose-led organisation
- Strong governance knowledge and understanding of Board responsibilities
- Experience and networks in one or more of the following areas:
- Philanthropy and major donor fundraising
- Corporate partnerships and sponsorship
- Climate, environment, tourism or related sectors
- Strategic mindset with the ability to support scaling and organisational growth
- A collaborative, values-driven leadership style
- Passion for ocean protection, climate action and community-led change
Time Commitment
- Monthly Board meetings (remote)
- Additional time for Chair/CEO check-ins and key strategic matters
- Approx. 10-15 hours per month
- 1–2 year term (renewable)
