About Us

Fams is the NSW peak body representing the child protection NGO early intervention and prevention sector.

The Fams Board is a values-led, skills-based team of volunteer leaders who bring diverse insight to guide the organisation. We are committed to inclusive governance and welcome applications from individuals who reflect the diversity, strengths, and aspirations of NSW.

About the Role

This is a voluntary position.

As a Board Director of Fams, you will contribute your leadership, insight, and expertise to shape the organisation’s strategic direction and governance.  You will play a key role in advancing Fams’ mission and values, championing child safety and cultural safety, and ensuring the organisation remains responsive, impactful, and future-focused. Fams is currently implementing its 2025 Strategic Plan.

All meetings are to be held virtually via Microsoft Teams and in person on Gadigal Country (Sydney). Funding is available to support accessibility of our regional and remote Board Directors.

Board Directors are expected to attend at least six board meetings per year, the Annual General Meeting and Annual Strategy Day.

Key responsibilities for all Board Directors:

  • Cultivate a culture of integrity, empathy, equity, and inclusion that strengthens board governance and organisational leadership.
  • Monitor and evaluate organisational policies and practices to ensure they support safe, inclusive environments.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legal, regulatory, and contractual obligations through effective oversight and monitoring.
  • Provide strategic oversight of organisational risks including operational, reputational, and financial by supporting the implementation of robust controls and mitigation strategies.

We are seeking individuals with:

  • Understanding of board responsibilities, including legal, ethical, fiduciary, and financial duties
  • Knowledge of governance principles and practices
  • Commitment to Fams’ vision, mission, values, and strategic direction
  • Current Working with Children Check and Police Check
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and motivate diverse teams and stakeholders
  • Willingness to contribute skills, experience, and insights to a collaborative and forward-thinking board.

A few things to consider:

  • We know that confidence gaps and systemic barriers can stop people from applying. If you’re passionate about making a difference and have skills that align, even if you don’t tick every box, we encourage you to apply.
  • We are committed to child safety at all levels of our work. All Board Directors share responsibility for creating environments where children are safe, and their voices are heard.
  • Fams is committed to actively embracing our responsibilities to First Nations children, young people, families and communities. All Board Directors must commit to a journey of reflection and genuine action to embed cultural safety and inclusivity for First Nations peoples in all our work.
