Help Grow Australia's Community Gardening Movement

Community Gardens Australia (CGA) is the national peak body supporting community gardens across Australia. We connect, support and advocate for hundreds of community gardens that strengthen local food systems, community wellbeing, environmental sustainability and social connection.

As CGA continues to grow, we are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Board Secretary to join our volunteer Board of Directors.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute your governance, administration and organisational skills to a national organisation making a real difference in communities across Australia.

About the Role

The Board Secretary plays a critical role in ensuring the effective governance and administration of Community Gardens Australia. Working closely with the Chair, Treasurer and fellow Directors, the Secretary supports the Board to meet its legal, constitutional and reporting obligations while helping maintain strong governance systems and records.

The role is ideally suited to someone with experience in governance, administration, company secretarial duties, board support, compliance, project coordination or organisational management.

We Are Looking For Someone Who Has:

  • Strong organisational and administrative skills
  • Excellent written communication and attention to detail
  • Experience preparing agendas, minutes and board papers
  • An understanding of governance and board processes
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information
  • A collaborative and positive approach to working with volunteers
  • A commitment to strengthening community-led initiatives across Australia

Highly Desirable

  • Previous experience as a Board Secretary, Company Secretary or Governance Officer
  • Experience in the not-for-profit sector
  • Knowledge of the Corporations Act, ACNC requirements or governance best practice
  • Experience supporting fundraising, grants or sponsorship initiatives

What You'll Gain

  • The opportunity to contribute to a growing national organisation
  • Experience working with an engaged and passionate Board
  • Professional development opportunities in governance and leadership
  • The satisfaction of helping strengthen community gardens, local food security and community resilience across Australia

Time Commitment

This is a voluntary, unpaid position.

  • Approximately 2–4 hours per week
  • Monthly online Board meetings
  • Attendance at a minimum of 80% of Board meetings
  • Preferred commitment of two years

All CGA positions are undertaken remotely.
