ORGANISATION OVERVIEW:

Good Neighbours Australia (GNAU) is part of a global international development organisation (Good Neighbors) which was founded in 1991 to reduce poverty in some of the most marginalised communities in the world. GNAU was launched in 2018 to specifically support communities in South and South East Asia, through education, health, nutrition, water and sanitation, and economic empowerment programs, and support our global network in their relief efforts. 

Its Mission is to deliver programs to help those suffering from poverty, disasters and oppression, to rebuild hope and achieve self-reliance.

Its 2030 Vision is: Empowering People, Transforming Communities.

COMMITTEE OVERVIEW:

GNAU’s Committee currently comprises five members, who meet quarterly. In addition, its two Sub-committees, the Finance and Risk Sub-committee and the Programs Sub-Committee, also meet quarterly.  

Collectively GNAU’s Committee members provide strategic leadership, oversight, and accountability to ensure the organisation fulfils its mission ethically, effectively, and sustainably. As GNAU’s governing body, the Committee safeguards its long‑term viability, ensures compliance with legal and regulatory obligations, and upholds the trust placed in the organisation by its beneficiaries, donors, partners, and the wider community.

Specifically, the Committee ensures GNAU:  

• Operates in alignment with its mission, vision, values and strategic objectives.

• Uses resources responsibly, transparently, and in the best interests of the communities it serves.
• Complies with all relevant Australian laws, including ACNC governance standards, workplace laws, privacy requirements, and financial reporting obligations.
• Manages risks proactively and maintains strong internal controls.
• Monitors organisational performance and holds the Executive Director accountable for delivering agreed outcomes.
• Engages ethically with stakeholders and maintains a culture of integrity, respect, and inclusion.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF COMMITTEE MEMBERS:

Governance and oversight

• Contributes to the development, approval, and monitoring of the organisation’s strategic plan.
• Reviews organisational performance against goals, budgets, and impact measures.
• Ensures compliance with legal, regulatory, and contractual obligations.
• Participates in risk identification, assessment, and mitigation.

Financial stewardship

• Reviews and approves annual budgets, financial statements, and major expenditures.
• Ensures the organisation maintains sound financial management practices.
• Monitors financial sustainability and supports responsible resource allocation.

Leadership and culture

• Promotes ethical conduct, transparency, and accountability across the organisation.
• Supports a positive, inclusive, and safe organisational culture.
• Acts as an ambassador for the organisation in the community.

Executive Director oversight

• Appoints, supports, and evaluates the Executive Director.  
• Provides guidance while respecting operational boundaries.
• Ensures clear delegation of authority and monitors performance against agreed objectives.

Stakeholder engagement

• Strengthens relationships with donors, partners, government bodies, and community stakeholders.
• Represents the organisation professionally at events, meetings, and public forums.
• Supports fundraising and advocacy efforts where appropriate.

Committee participation and contribution

• Attends and actively participates in Committee meetings, Sub-committees, and strategic planning sessions.
• Prepares for meetings by reviewing papers and staying informed about organisational matters.
• Contributes skills, expertise, and independent judgement to Committee deliberations.
• Maintains confidentiality and manages conflicts of interest responsibly.

Legal and ethical duties

• Acts in good faith and in the best interests of the organisation.
• Avoids misuse of position or information.
• Ensures decisions are made with care, diligence, and informed consideration.
• Upholds the organisation’s constitution, policies, and governance standards.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

While Committee members are expected to have broad strategic, financial, leadership and communication skills, at this time, GNAU is seeking a Fundraising specialist to enhance the Committee and Sub-committees’ expertise. The skills and experience GNAU is seeking are;

 Fundraising and resource development

• Experience with fundraising, philanthropy, or donor relations

• Ability to support grant applications, partnerships, and sponsorships

• Networks that can help expand the organisation’s reach and resources

• Legal, Compliance and Risk Expertise on fundraising

 Leadership and people skills

• Experience in leadership roles (executive, managerial, or community-based)

• Strong interpersonal and relationship‑building skills

• Ability to work collaboratively and contribute constructively to group decision‑making

• Conflict resolution and negotiation skills
