Identified Appointments for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People
Community Resources is an Aboriginal-led organisation and is seeking Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representation on their Board of Directors.
About the organisation
Community Resources is a national Aboriginal-led not-for-profit and registered charity. We’re driven by a clear vision: everyone in meaningful work, connected to Country and community.
We run some of the largest social enterprises in the country: Resource Recovery Australia, Soft Landing and Green Yakka who all work to clean up, protect or benefit Country. We also deliver place-based community services in regional communities through Homebase Youth Services, The Great Lakes and Manning Youth Homelessness Service (GLAMYHS), and Helping Hands. We employ over 750 people across 31 sites nationally.
Last year (FY25) we created 960 employment opportunities, 70% of whom experienced barriers to employment, we kept over 18,000 tonnes of waste out of landfill; and we provided over 68,000 community service instances to those who need it most. We do this to make the world fairer and life better.

Be part of our journey as an Aboriginal-led organisation to deliver opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Established on Worimi Country on the NSW Mid North Coast nearly 40 years ago, Community Resources now operates nationally with a clear aim to make a stronger, fairer Australia.
We have been on a journey to reconnect with our roots and we are proud of what we have achieved and where we are going. We are strengthening our cultural foundations, amplifying Aboriginal voices in our leadership, and ensuring our work is guided by the values, knowledge and priorities of our communities.
Our Constitution reflects this commitment through a unique Co-Chair model, requiring one being Aboriginal and one being female. We are currently recruiting to replace one of our female board members who is stepping down. Community Resources is also committed to maintaining a minimum of 50% female representation on its Board and strongly encourage female candidates to apply.
Since transitioning to a skills-based Board in 2020, Community Resources has grown to include nine directors. As an Aboriginal-led organisation, we are committed to achieving and maintaining a majority Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander representation on our board of management.
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a values-driven organisation making a meaningful impact in communities across Australia.
About the role
As a Board Director at Community Resources, you will play a key role in providing leadership and strategic oversight, helping guide the organisation’s direction and ensuring effective governance. Directors oversee the Executive and General Management teams in the implementation of strategic initiatives aligned with Community Resources’ mission and values.
The Board meets 5–6 times per year (excluding Committee meetings), with meetings primarily conducted online to support flexibility and accessibility. The Board meets in-person twice a year. Over time, Directors are expected to commit approximately 3–4 days per month, including meeting attendance, preparation, committee participation, governance and strategic initiatives, and engagement with staff and key stakeholders. All Directors are expected to participate in a Committee.
Selection Criteria
- Strong understanding of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander culture and perspectives, particularly in the context of governance and leadership.
- Proven experience as a Board Director, with a solid understanding of governance and strategy practice and best practices.
- Strong networks in one or more of the industry or impact sectors CR operates in (employment, social enterprise, waste/recycling, community services).
- Highly developed strategic thinking skills, with the ability to contribute to long-term organisational planning, and commercial growth.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to listen and participate in discussions and develop convincing viewpoints to address the issues faced by the Board.
- Ability to critically analyse complex and detailed information and develop practical and creative solutions.
About you
You’ll be a strategic thinker with strong communication skills and the ability to influence decision-making at the highest level. Your leadership and enthusiasm will help drive Community Resources’ purpose.
While applicants may be located anywhere in Australia, we are particularly interested in hearing from candidates based in Queensland and Western Australia.
In addition to your leadership qualities, you will bring expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Digital Strategy: Knowledge of digital transformation, data governance, cybersecurity and leveraging technology to enhance service delivery.
- Philanthropy and innovative funding: Strategic opportunities to secure philanthropic, government and grant-based fundraising efforts, leveraging networks to secure and sustain high-impact funding.
- Public policy and government relations: Understanding of government policy, policy advocacy, service system - particularly in employment, waste recovery, or social enterprise.
We consider that being an Aboriginal and/or a Torres Strait Islander person is a genuine occupational requirement for this position under the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
What we can offer you
- A meaningful opportunity to contribute to one of Australia’s largest social enterprises, driving positive change in communities across the country.
- A chance to work with an organisation that values Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership and diverse perspectives, and is committed to inclusive governance.
