About Us

The Community Bike Hub is a not for profit organisation and a certified Social Enterprise with a mission to reduce barriers to cycling in Melbourne's west. Established in 2019, The Community Bike Hub services the community in a broad variety of ways: we run a full service retail workshop, an education program teaching basic bike mechanic skills to over 400 students and community members per year, a bicycle education centre that teaches over 1000 children and adults how to ride each year and a community volunteer program that encourages community connection, learning and contribution to our mission. In all aspects of our organisation, we place community, sustainability and supporting members of our society that experience barriers to cycling at the heart of our work.

As a certified social enterprise we maintain a balance between achieving our mission and impact targets with the obligations of a sustainable trading organisation.

All of our operations feed into our mission of contributing to a sustainable and circular economy while funnelling into our donation program providing equitable access to active transport for refugees and asylum seekers. Based across four locations, the Community Bike Hub is governed by a Board that meets monthly to shape the organisation’s strategic goals and contribute to its long-term success.

About the Role

We are seeking to appoint three new volunteer Board Members, preferably from Melbourne's west with experience in the NFP or community services sector to join our Board for a three-year term and help guide the future direction of our organisation. As a member of our Board, you will work collaboratively with fellow Board members and organisational leadership to provide effective governance and strategic oversight.

We would particularly like to hear from candidates with connection to the community in Melbourne's west, have a keen interest in cycling culture and active transport and/or education or fundraising experience

Key responsibilities include:

• Preparing for and contributing constructively to Board discussions and decision-making
• Exercising sound judgement and acting in the best interests of the organisation and its beneficiaries
• Providing effective oversight of organisational performance, risk and governance
• Working collaboratively and respectfully with fellow Board members and senior leadership
• Where relevant, applying professional expertise to help the Board understand obligations, manage risks and identify opportunities

About You

You may be an experienced director, professional, community leader, or someone with expertise lived experience that would strengthen our Board.

We are looking for someone who is:

• Committed to strong governance and informed decision-making
• Confident in contributing an independent perspective while working collaboratively towards collective Board decisions
• Forward-thinking, proactive and able to help shape the Board’s strategic direction
• Able to communicate clearly and respectfully, with the ability to build positive, constructive relationships with fellow Board members and senior leadership

Commitment

• Term period: 3 years
• Board meetings: Monthly, generally on the third Tuesday of each month
• Time: Evening, commencing at 6:00pm
• Location: West Footscray
• Remuneration: Expenses only. Volunteer position
