Expression of Interest – Background and invite for EOI’s for chair and director roles
MHW WA is the peak independent not-for-profit charity organisation (since 1993) dedicated to representing and promoting the health and wellbeing of boys and men in Western Australia.
MHWWA is seeking expressions of interest (EOI) for the role of chair and director. These are pro-bono roles.
MHWWA does not have an executive officer and funding has been intermittent and project specific.
The MHWWA board is a team of volunteers with a range of backgrounds in engineering, business consulting, governance, training and education, media, counselling, finance and politics. Some hours are required each week for administration and networking.
Member representation
As a peak body, our legitimacy depends on how well we reflect and represent the needs, views, and priorities of our members and stakeholders. The chair and board must understand constituency-based leadership and can engage diverse voices, balance different perspectives, and provide coherent representation for a broad field.
Government engagement
The Chair and board must be capable of engaging constructively with government, departments, policy-makers, advisers, and institutional stakeholders. This is not purely an advocacy role. It requires someone who can operate as a trusted, evidence-based, solutions-oriented representative and position MHWWA as a credible contributor to conversations about men’s health, prevention, service design, and sector priorities.
Business acumen
We need a board with the judgement and commercial capability to diversify MHWWA’s revenue streams and strengthen long-term sustainability. Government funding remains important, but our next phase will require someone who can identify and develop aligned opportunities for growth, partnerships, and income diversification while maintaining the integrity of our representative role.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidates will bring:
- senior executive leadership experience in a purpose-driven, membership, policy, representative, or public-interest environment
- demonstrated experience engaging government and senior external stakeholders with credibility
- the ability to represent a membership base, sector, constituency, or network in a balanced and authentic way
- strong strategic judgement and the ability to sharpen organisational focus
- commercial and organisational acumen, including experience in revenue diversification, partnerships, fundraising, sponsorship, or sustainable growth
- the capacity to lead a lean organisation with national relevance and outsized external responsibility
- strong communication skills, political judgement, and public credibility
Candidates do not need to come directly from men’s health. Relevance of capability matters more than exact sector match. Strong candidates may come from peak bodies, member associations, health or social policy organisations, advocacy or representative organisations, or purpose-led not-for-profits with significant government and stakeholder engagement.
