The Australian Opal Centre (AOC) has recently undergone major structural and governance changes
In June 2025 all construction on a new build museum project was halted after predominantly government funding of $36M was exhausted
In the November AGM 2025, 5 of 6 Board members stood down or did not stand for re-election
The new board was not made aware of the serious financial status of the AOC prior to election
Since election the new board has stabilised and secured the financial situation of the AOC
The board is now in the process of fully restructuring AOC operations and creating a viable and self- sustaining business mode
The AOC has a valuable, mainly opalised, fossil Collection (with secure funding) which is the core of our purpose
All current directors have taken a hands-on approach to ensure the Collection, a community resource, donated mostly by miners from the Lightning Ridge area will be retained in Lighting Ridge for the Community
We are in need of an experienced person to fulfil the important role of Secretary with respect to assistance in organising board meetings, minutes and other administrative duties. The position will develop as the AOC rebuilds during the next two to three years
