Australians have continued to open their hearts in the face of continuing economic uncertainty, according to new data from leading social enterprise Our Community.

Our Community's online Australian Giving Centre has received record totals every month this financial year. The November total of more than $163,000 was an increase of over 30 per cent on November 2007 and the December 2007 total of $143,000 has now been topped with more than a week still left in this month.

This month's total will only be topped by December 2004, when more than $1.2 million was given as a result of the Boxing Day tsunami.

The Giving Centre allows people to donate online to their choice of more than 1300 community causes nationally and has received more than $8 million in donations since its inception eight years ago.

"It is heartening to see how Australians have responded - and continued to respond - in these difficult economic times," Our Community CEO Dr Rhonda Galbally AO said.

"Yes, it is the season for giving, but hundreds of people have also recognised how important it is to share - whether it be their money, gifts or simply their time - at this time of year too."
