Crown land in New South Wales

OI8.6 Councils Managing Crown Reserves

Tuesday 9 November - 1:00pm-3:00pm

Every local council in NSW participates in the management of Crown reserves as an appointed Crown Land Manager (CLM). Together, 128 councils manage more than 7,500 Crown reserves and over 2,000 reserves as devolved managers. In many cases, councils also rely on volunteer groups and individuals to provide management support. This interactive workshop explores the legislation, structure and responsibilities of Council CLMs, whilst focusing particularly on the role of Council CLMs in volunteer management and community engagement. The session will also provide the opportunity for facilitated discussion on some of the biggest issues and possible identification of effective practices and solutions. The workshop covers: - Understanding where council CLMs sit in relation to the Local Government and the Crown Lands legislation, as well as their own council and the elected councillors - The differences between council and non-council CLMs: roles and responsibilities (classification and categorisation, POMS, leases & licenses and Native title) - Council CLMs and community engagement - The role of councils in community development and the benefits to Council CLMs in partnering and supporting local volunteer CLMs - Establishing a community of practice for council CLMs across different NSW jurisdictions: facilitated discussion on some of the biggest issues and possible identification of effective practices and solutions. Please note: Interactive Workshops are limited to 15 registrations / attendees
